WITH the weather having well and truly taken a turn, it’s time we all started thinking about ways to keep our homes toasty over the chilly months.
And given that energy bills are still well above their norm, it’s more important this year than ever that we’re not flicking the heating on willy-nilly.
Luckily, one savvy mum has shared three foolproof tricks for keeping your places as warm as possible this winter – and each will take you only a few minutes.
Gemma Bird is a thrifty influencer who regularly shares tips and hacks with her 403k followers on her Instagram account @MoneyMumOfficial.
And in a recent clip that racked up almost 140k views, she shared three nifty ways that you can stay warm this winter without racking up a huge heating bill.
Gemma’s first tip is to “draft proof any doors”, which you can do by cleaning the area, cutting a draft excluder to size and sticking it down.
“My lounge gets freezing in the winter,” the money-saving maestro explains, “and did you know you can lose up to £50 a year on drafts?”
“So make sure you’re doing this,” she added while filming herself securing excluders in place around her own home’s doors, “and also do it with all your windows.”
“It’s really simple and easy to do.”
Gemma’s second tip is uber-simple, and costs less than £1 to do.
The thrifty mum explains that if you “descale your appliances” – kettles, dishwashers and the like – “they become more energy efficient”.
So not only will it be nice to have a sparkling clean kettle – it will also help it “last longer and work better”, as well as save you a load of dosh on your energy bills.
The canny homeowner’s third tip is to place moisture absorbers around the house.
She opts for UniBond’s Aero 360 ones which you can pick up for around £15, adding that they remove humidity which helps heat your energy faster and thus reduce your bills.
“Doing all these tricks will help you save money on your energy bills throughout the year,” Gemma explains in the caption.
And grateful followers flocked to her comment section to thank the money-saving guru for her handy tips.
“Best tips ever! Thanks Gem,” one wrote alongside an applause emoji.
“These things make such a difference!!” another added.
“Did not even know about moisture absorbers!” a third confessed. “Thanks Gemma.”
