Erik ten Hag is open to Mason Greenwood returning to Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

Greenwood made the move to La Liga side Getafe in the final hour of the summer transfer window after United concluded from their internal investigation that the 22-year-old should restart his career elsewhere following his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into Ten Hag’s squad before the club received major backlash from supporters over his return.

Last month, United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, left the door open for Greenwood’s return and insisted a new decision will be made over the player’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

Greenwood has thrived during his loan spell with Getafe, and the Spanish club’s president has said that the forward’s preference is to remain in Spain for another season.

According to The Sun, Ten Hag has made it clear he would welcome Greenwood’s return to United, but only if ‘it works for all parties’.

Meanwhile, a source close to the situation also told the newspaper that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will not drag out the decision through the summer.

‘Jim Ratcliffe wants it resolved by the end of May so they can go into the summer knowing what’s happening,’ the source said.

‘There’s interest in Mason from Barcelona but no move and no talks will happen until the end of May. Right now, the view is that there is a 50/50 chance Mason could return.

‘If it was a purely football decision he’d already be back. But it’s not.

‘And Ratcliffe is acutely aware of the need to get this right and for all parties to be happy with whatever is decided.’
