MPs are now debating the Safety of Rwanda Bill, as the latest round of “parliamentary ping pong” between the two Houses of Parliament gets underway.
There will be seven amendments debated and voted on tonight, with MPs expected to vote down all the Lords’ Amendments.
The safety of Rwanda Bill, introduced to Parliament after the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Government’s scheme was unlawful, would declare the country as safe – paving the way for migrants to be sent there.
In its ruling, the court said genuine refugees being deported there would be at risk of being returned to their home countries, where they could face harm.
The Rwanda scheme was introduced in April 2022, by then-prime minister Boris Johnson, with the aim of deterring people from travelling to the UK on small boats across the English Channel.
Rishi Sunak has faced obstacles to his Bill from the House of Lords, but Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said on Sunday she was confident the legislation would pave the way for the first removals to the country “within weeks.”
