Katie Price’s mum has claimed being sexually assaulted was the catalyst for her daughter’s ‘downward spiral’ with her mental health.
The reality star has spoken openly about her struggles, having attempted suicide on two occasions over recent years.
Amy, 71, has now said that things started to become really bad for the former glamour model, 45, after she was attacked on a safari in 2018.
Writing in her new memoir, The Last Word, Amy explained that the alleged ordeal happened while Katie was filming for her Quest Red reality show, My Crazy Life.
What ensued was a terrifying carjacking, with one of four robbers touching Katie without her consent.
In quotes from Amy’s book obtained by The Sun, she writes: ‘Following a safari trip, which everyone had enjoyed, the production company decided to try to cross the border into Swaziland at a time of day that wasn’t safe, along a road that wasn’t safe.
‘They were attacked by four robbers. One of the men put his hands down Kate’s trousers and sexually assaulted her before touching her all over and hitting her hard.
‘Junior, Princess and a crew member were being attacked in the back seat by another robber and everyone was screaming for help.’
At the time a spokesperson for Multistory Media said that ‘all security protocols were followed’ regarding the incident and ‘extensive and long-term support was offered to Katie and her family following the robbery.’
‘It would be easy to pinpoint the beginning of Kate’s downward spiral to the carjacking fiasco,’ Amy added.
‘A few months after the traumatic incident, one of Kate’s friends rang me to say they had found her trying to kill herself.’
Amy was diagnosed as terminally ill with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable lung condition, in 2017, and believes her own illness has also caused a lot of ‘anxiety’ for Katie.
‘For years, Kate has relied on me as her protector, confidante, and first emergency service and there must have been times in the dead of night when she wondered if she would be able to manage without a mum.’
Katie has spoken about the robbery she experienced on safari, telling Channel 4’s SAS: Celebrity Who Dares Wins in 2020: ‘Police said it was a miracle they didn’t kill us.’
She’s also been frank over her mental health struggles, saying in her programme Trauma and Me last year that she ‘hit severe depression a couple of years ago’.
‘I was suicidal, didn’t want to be here. I tried to kill myself.’
Katie has been having regular therapy and has received treatment from The Priory clinic for her PTSD, having first checked in to the rehab facility after her drink-drive crash.
The model has also said that she now feels ‘thankful’ to have survived her suicide attempts.
Taking to her Instagram Story in April, the Mucky Mansion star expressed disbelief that ‘everyone seems to be just dying’ in her industry ‘at the moment’.
‘I’m just sticking to being strong and sticking to therapists’ advice and focusing on the future knowing I’ve been near death in causing my own suicide actiones that thankfully I survived [sic]’, she wrote.
Katie added that she’s ‘realised I have a future and life’, shouting out her family, close friends, and mental health professionals for their support.
